Build It and They Will Come - Walter Payton Recreation & Wellness Center
In 2002, after many years of research and analysis, the Board of Trustees approved the construction of a new Student Union & Recreation Center on your campus. After some discussion the project was halted due to the decision that the value of recreation was too great not to stand alone in a separate facility. The new Walter Payton Recreation & Wellness Center situated on the East side of campus will host 100,000 square feet of recreational facilities for Jackson State University students, faculty, staff, and their families. The new building, in addition to current outdoor facilities of the track, tennis courts, and intramural fields will give our university community access to the space and equipment needed to experience and run the best recreational sports program in the country. We anticipate offering additional diverse programs, equipment, facilities and customer service as demand warrants.
The majority of funding for the overall Walter Payton Recreation & Wellness Center project will come from a student fee, which will appear on students’ tuition bill, following the opening of the RWC. This fee will be a percentage of the full mandatory student fee. In addition to the student fee, other funding sources are in place, including faculty, staff, and affiliate membership fees, development dollars, and program revenue.
Rest assured, the Office of Recreation Services has done its homework by comparing prices, facilities, and programs with other universities and local fitness clubs. We feel that the facility will be an asset to the university and give students another reason to be proud of Jackson State University.
